Adrian, Mich. – Siena Heights University (SHU) students are joining a nationwide effort to preserve the stories of Catholic sisters. The project, called SisterStory, is funded by the Hilton Foundation and pairs female students at universities founded by sisters with a sister to learn her life story, record it and send it to a national archive.
“The idea is, there are fewer vocations in religious life is you were in school with a lot of Sisters. You got to know a lot of Sisters because you were in school with them, and you had daily interactions; that doesn’t really happen as much anymore.” Sister Mary Jones, director of SHU’s mission education explained.
She further stated, “We’re blessed here at Siena because there are several Sisters around, but a lot of the different campuses that are universities and colleges that have been founded by Sisters do not have a lot of Sisters there. So there idea was let’s create a Sister story in the idea of ‘let’s have the sister tell their stories’.”
SHU junior communications major, Kristen Pitts is one of the first participants in the project and encourages other students to consider joining the preservation effort. “My goal that I would like to accomplish for the SisterStory Project would have to be just for students to be more aware of the Sisters that are on campus, because Siena was founded by them and for them to know the history that is literally right next door to them.”
Pitts noted that the Adrian Dominican Motherhouse is right next door. “Just go over to the Motherhouse, and get to know a sister; they’re always willing to talk to students and they love the interaction with the university. And once you hear their stories you just want to know more. “
