NAACP Visits Campus; Talk of Chapter at SHU

The NAACP recently visited campus to talk about starting a chapter here at Siena Heights University. The group visited to inform us of their purpose. The mission of the NAACP is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of all persons, eliminating racial hatred and racial discrimination.

It is the oldest civil rights organization in the country. The NAACP has a great purpose and means a lot to the communities all across the nation. I went to the meeting to learn about what they do and what they want to accomplish, including starting a chapter here at Siena Heights.

Why should you join the NAACP? You will never know when you will need them, and they support programs and legal actions of anyone in the nation that could involve the NAACP. They deal with anything and everything, small or large, when it comes to racial cases.

When I went to see what they were all about, there weren’t a lot of people at the meeting, which is unfortunate, because it has such a good cause and mission. I don’t understand why more people don’t join. Here are some basics about the NAACP:

The Mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of the rights of all persons and the eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.

 

Objectives

  • To ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of all citizens
  • To achieve equality of rights and eliminate race prejudice among the citizens of the United States
  • To remove all barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes
  • To seek enactment and enforcement of federal, state and local laws securing civil rights
  • To inform the public of the adverse effects of racial discrimination and to seek its elimination
  • To educate person as to their constitutional rights and to take all lawful action to secure the exercise thereof and to take any other lawful  actions in furtherance of these objectives, consistent with the NAACP’s Articles of Incorporation and this Constitution.

Why join the Lenawee County Branch?

  1. You never know when you or someone you are about might need the NAACP.
  2. To support programs and legal actions of the national office, as well as the local branch
  3. To help pay for the cost of operational expenses such as telephone, mailing, and office supplies, etc.
  4. To support NAACP voter registration and voter education programs locally.
  5. To support investigations of complaints.
  6. To provide financial support to worthy community organizations and programs that promotes the NAACP missions and goals.
  7. To support the training of branch officers and members.
