Baseball

This past weekend, the Saints took part in a trio of double headers and started out against Cleary at Siena Heights. In game one against Cleary on Wednesday and kept Cleary scoreless for the first four innings. The Saints were also unable to score within the four innings and received their sole run on aTravis Podolak sac fly. The Saints were outscored in their run scoring inning 5-1 after falling behind early and losing game one 6-1. Podolak led the Saints going 2-2 batting while Tyler Butlin was the losing pitcher.

In game two, the Saints received a huge contribution from Lucas Bartz, who surged them with an RBI triple in the second inning and went on to score on a wild pitch to make it a 2-all tie. In the sixth inning the Saints were able to pull away with three runs thanks to RBIs from Zack Dunlop and Drew Miligan to go ahead and win game two 5-2.

Thursday the Saints took part in their second double-header this time on the road against Concordia. In game one, pitcher Brent Vaccaro was the hero, pitching a complete game while allowing one earned run on five hits. He added seven strikeouts to the contest while three Saints recorded multiple hits in game one which the Saints went on to win 3-2.

In game two, the Saints were blanked through all seven innings while allowing eight runs for the home team.Travis Strickland led the visitors going 3-3 with a double.

In the final double header for the week, the Saints traveled back on the road on Saturday for a rematch against Concordia. In game one the visitors took an early lead in the first inning but fell behind by a score of 2-1 at the bottom of the second. After trading runs in the fourth inning, Concordia ripped off a three run fifth to take a 6-2 lead and would never allow the Saints to get any closer. Dunlop was the bulk of the Saints’ offensive power, going 3-4 with an RBI. Thomas McCarter was the losing pitcher, giving up five runs on four hits.

Game two had the Saints trailing 3-0 after one. In the top of the third the Saints closed the gap, scoring on a balk as well as an RBI single from Eric Henderson to cut the lead to 3-2. After falling 4-2 going into the sixth, Dunlop had an RBI double which evened the game up at 4-4. Concordia retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth and although the Saints went on to score three runs in the seventh, so did Concordia, which went on to win game two 8-7. Taylor Thelen was the losing pitcher in game two, giving up seven earned runs and nine hits.

Men’s Lacrosse

On Saturday the Saints took to the field on the road to take on conference for, Lourdes. At the end of one, both teams were tied at three apiece, but in the second stanza the Saints took control, allowing two goals and doubling that to take a 7-5 lead at half. The second half yielded much of the same, with the Saints adding another nine goals while allowing four to go away with a 16-9 route of the opposition. Nick Lyons and Danny Orr led the way for the Saints with four goals between the both of them while goaltender Ryan Mailloux came away with 11 stops.

Men’s Track

The Saints opened their outdoor season with a fifth place finish at Miami (OH) Invitational. Gauge Aebersold earned a third place finish in Shot Put with an automatic qualifying distance of 55’3 ¾” while EJ Daffin, Gerald Richardson and Matthew Leaders all recorded provisional performances. Daffin and Richardson tied for second in High jump with a height of 6’8 ¾” while Leaders runner-up in Pole vault with a height of 15’7”.

On Monday the Saints traveled to Defiance, Ohio to compete in the Defiance Dick Small Invitational. Richardson went on to win the High jump with a height of 6’9” while Aebersold and Patrick Goebel added new autos. Aebersold and Goebel took second and fourth place in Discus with distances of  160’3” and 157’9” respectively. Zakary Haines, Leaders and Matthew Parlette went on to win individual events as well. Haines took the 400 meter with a time of 49.72, Leaders cleared 14’11” in Pole vault for the win and Parlette ran a 4:03.48 in the 1,500 to take first.

Women’s Golf

Over the weekend, the Saints competed in the Spring Arbor Intercollegiate which hosted over 30 golfers. After day one, Alyssa Fausneaucht came out tied for first shooting an 80. Along with Fausneaucht, the remaining Saints are all locked up in the top 10. Sydney Gossett was tied for third while shooting an 83, Lauren Cojei and Andrea Richards were tied for fourth with 85s and Andrea Rumler was seventh with an 88. On day two of the SAU Intercollegiate much of the same from day one occurred as the Saints ran away from their competitors. Fausneaucht led the way for the Saints who took five of the top six places in the tournament. Behind Fausneaucht and her 162 two-day total, Gossett took second with a 164, Richards third with a 165,Cojei fifth with a 173 and Rumler sixth with a 177.

Women’s Lacrosse

Last week the Saints took on a pair of contests against Urbana and Lourdes. First up, the Saints traveled on the road to Urbana. At the end of a tough first half the Saints found themselves trailing 7-4 to the hosts. The Saints stormed back in the second half with a 7-3 scoring advantage and behind the stick of Erin Kehn with a total of five goals including the eventual game winner late in the second half. Madison Sabourin and Aliisa Mason added two goals apiece as well to allow the Saints to come away with a 11-10 win.

On Tuesday, the Saints hosted conference rival, Lourdes at O’Laughlin Stadium. At the end of the first, the Saints trailed 5-4 but would outscore their opponent 8-4 in the second half with the help of Kehn, Mason and Sabrina Snow who recorded a total of 10 goals.Sabourin and Sydney VanHoose added the finishing touches each scoring one goal respectively while Tabitha Ferguson was the winning goaltender with 10 saves.

Softball

The Saints competed in a pair of doubleheaders against Lourdes and U of M Dearborn. Last Wednesday the Saints traveled to  Sylvania, Ohio to take on Lourdes and in game one were able to capitalize early on. By the bottom of the first, the Saints had given themselves a three score cushion leading the hosts 5-2 thanks to the batting of Megan Jones, Morgan Warfield and Skylar Crenshaw. Jones added a two-run single in the first, while Warfield added a two-run triple followed by a Crenshaw RBI single. The Saints never trailed in game one, with Kelsie Abbott going 2-3 with two doubles and three runs, while Jones and Mariah Boss each went 2-4 with two runs and four RBIs between them. Abbott was also the winning pitcher of game one with four earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts. The Saints took game one 8-6.

In game two, the Saints struggled to find runs, only turning two on the board in the second inning to give them a 2-1 lead which wouldn’t hold up. Lourdes would go on to outscore the Saints 9-0 in the remaining innings to take game two 10-2. Jones went 2-3 for the Saints while Warfield was tagged with the loss.

On Saturday the Saints hosted U of M Dearborn for a two game bout. In game one, the Saints had a short 1-0 lead after the first inning which soon turned into 9-1 deficit going into the bottom of the fifth. The Saints battled back adding six runs between the fifth and sixth innings to close the gap to 9-7. They were unable to keep the runs piling up in the seventh however, and dropped game one by a final of 9-7. Jones, Warfield and Taylor Hayes went 2-4 in game one, with Jones homering and Hayes adding a double. Abbott was the loser in game one with four strikeouts and seven earned runs.

In game two the hot hitting of U of M continued. After leading after one 1-0, the Saints would go scoreless until the bottom of the fourth where most of the damage would already be done. The Saints trailed 11-1 in the bottom of the fourth before adding a run to make it 11-2. After the visitors scored one in the fifth to push it back to a 10 run game, the Saints answered with a seven run inning in part thanks to Kyndle Wolfinger and Crenshaw. Crenshaw was able to add a two run single after Dearborn gave up a bases loaded walk to Hannah Bleikamp, and Wolfinger later came away with a two run triple to close the gap to 12-9 after the fifth. The Saints wouldn’t get any closer as the visitors pulled away with four runs in the last two innings to win game two 16-9.

Women’s Track

Last weekend the Saints took sixth at the Miami (OH) Invitational behind the bounce of Marissa Johnson and power of Kasey Renshaw. Johnson placed second in the High jump with a height of 5’6” while Renshaw took fourth in Shot put with a distance of 44’ 2 ½”. Stephanie Marquardt added an eighth place finish in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.97.

On Monday the girls also traveled to Defiance to compete in the Defiance Dick Small Invitational and came away with three auto performances. Johnson went on to win the High jump with a height of 5’7” while Renshaw and Cousineau added autos in the Hammer throw. Renshaw placed third with a distance of 177’7” while Cousineau took  seventh with 156’5”. Sheila McKinley went away with a second place finish in Pole vault with a height of 11’5 ¾”, coming away with a provisional qualifying mark.
