Baseball

The Saints took part in a total of 7 games this past week, including three doubleheaders. Last Wednesday, the Saints first traveled to take on Marygrove and in game one took off with their scoring spree in the second inning with a two shot homer from Travis Stricklin. In the fourth, the Saints took total control with nine runs behind a Nathaniel Kraus two run single along with RBIs from Eric Henderson, Zack Dunlop, Raymond Cleary, Austin Hauck and Dennis Sharp. In the fifth, the Saints added another pair of RBIs and finished with 14 total runs in the two innings, leading them to a 17-0 route in game one. Thomas McCarter was the winning pitcher with a three hit shutout, adding a pair of strikes and one walk to the tally.

In game two, the Saints took a 1-0 lead in the second inning behind a Kraus RBI, and Dunlop and Hauck added a sac fly and an RBI single in the third prior to Henderson giving the Saints a 4-0 lead behind his sac fly in the fifth. After the gap was closed to 4-3 in the sixth inning, Henderson came through with a two run double to give the Saints a comfortable 6-3 win. Along with Henderson, Drew Milligan came through with a 2-3 game two with two runs and stolen base.

On Friday and Saturday, the Saints took on Indiana Tech and a two day doubleheader event. In game one, the Saints were simply unable to put together defensive stops or put up runs to help cancel them out. Giving up two runs in the first and eventually seven in the fourth, the Saints were unable to slow down Tech’s bats, losing game one 29-5.

In game two, Tech opened the first with two runs and never looked back. Dunlop led the Saints, going 2-4.

On Saturday, the second half of doubleheaders were played. In game one of Saturday, the Saints fell behind 2-0 in the opening inning before getting a solo shot from Dunlop and an RBI double from Kraus in the second to even it up. Kyle Kuhr would later draw a bases loaded walk in the sixth, and Milligan would add a two run single to push the lead to 5-2. Brent Vaccaro was the winning pitcher for the Saints, throwing a complete game dishing out nine hits without an earned run along with six strikeouts.

In the second game, the Saints fell behind 2-0 in the third and were unable to get any closer as Tech went on to add another four runs in the fourth inning. Dunlop and Henderson both went 2-3 with the Saints as they fell in game two 9-3.

This past Tuesday, the Saints took on cross town rival, Adrian, at Adrian College. They took an early 3-0 lead in the opening inning behind an RBI single from Hauck. Later in the third, Kraus and Henderson added RBI singles for the Saints to take a 5-1 lead before finding themselves down in the sixth. Adrian took a sixth inning lead behind a six run rally. SHU answered the bell with RBIs from Hauck and Dunlop, and Freddy Jehle had an RBI of his own along with a Hauck two run double to seal the win as the Saints won 11-7.

 

Men’s Lacrosse

The Saints competed in two contests this past week against Aquinas and U of M Dearborn. On Wednesday, the Saints traveled to Grand Rapids to take on nonconference Aquinas and started out taking period one by a score of 1-0. In the second, the Saints added two more from Tom Kreitzer and Chris Acton to take a 3-0 lead at the half. Aquinas rallied with two scores in the third period while Nate Woods added one for the Saints to make it 4-2. In the fourth, the Saints got scores from Chris Holowaty and Shane Lewandowski late to edge out the Aquinas surge for a 6-5 win. Ryan Mailloux recorded 11 stops for the Saints as the winning goaltender.

On Sunday, the Saints hosted U of M Dearborn in a 10-3 route with the CCLA Central Title. Kreitzer and Lewandowski led the way with six goals between them with two coming from teammate, Danny Orr. Mailloux had 13 saves for the Saints, who now look to move on and win their CCLA quarterfinal game.

Men’s Track

The Saints traveled to Allendale, MI to compete in the Grand Valley State’s Al Owens Classic this past weekend. Richard DePalma led the way for the Saints with a runner-up performance in the pole vault with a height of 16’8”, while Gauge Aebersold took sixth in the shot put with a distance of 51’7”. Logan Gray finished seventh in shot with a distance of 50’ 6 ¾” while Frederick Boyd took fifth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.73.

Women’s Golf

The Saints took to the Fairways at the Lourdes Invitational on Thursday as Jessa Rappleye and Elisabeth Higgins took second and third for the Saints who placed runner-up. Rappleye shot an 82, while Higgins recorded an 83.

Over the weekend, the Saints participated in the WHACs at Coyote Creek Golf Club, which hosted a total of 48 golfers from 10 schools. Sydney Gossett led the way for the Saints on day one with a 169, while Andrea Richards stood at 13th with a 173. On day two, Gossett finished tied for 13th individually with a score of 259 through three rounds while Andrea Rumler ended with a 263 to tie for 17th. As a team, the Saints took fourth behind Indiana Tech, Madonna, and Lawrence Tech.

Softball

Competing in a trio of doubleheaders this past week, the Saints started on Wednesday against Aquinas. In game one the Saints went scoreless for the first six innings while giving up five runs to Aquinas. After closing the gap to 5-2, the Saints had a chance to tie the game with a batter at the plate but were unable to convert losing game one 5-2. Kelsie Abbott and Kyndle Wolfinger led the way with 2-3 games while Megan Jones went 2-4. Abbott was the losing pitcher in game one, with two earned runs and four strikeouts while allowing seven hits.

In game two the Saints went scoreless, losing 8-0 and unable to find an offensive rhythm. Morgan Warfield was the losing pitcher for game two and recorded the sole hit for the Saints on offense.

On Saturday the Saints had a doubleheader against Cornerstone and in game one and opened with a 3-0 lead after the second and led the rest of the way. Warfield batted 2-4 while Taylor Hayes was 2-3  with an RBI. Mariah Boss scored three runs for the Saints. Abbott was the winning pitcher with a seven hit shutout with six strikeouts.

In game two the Saints fell to a 4-0 deficit early and were unable to regain composure losing 4-1.Hannah Bleikamp was added the Saints only run with an RBI single in the fifth.

On Sunday the Saints played host to Davenport in their third double of the week. In game one  of two both team came out swinging with a pair of runs each in the first. Megan Jones hit a two run homer for the Saints in the bottom of the first and it would be the only offense from either team for the next seven innings. In extras, the visitors erupted for an eight run ninth while the Saints tried to hold them in check. In response, the Saints were only able to muster up a Skylar Crenshaw homer in the ninth to fall in game one 10-3. Abbott was the loser of game one with three earned and three strikeouts.

Game two was over in the bottom of the third as the Saints were outscored 12-2 and never got any closer, losing 22-2.Taylor Heisler went 2-2 for the Saints and received an RBI single from Hayes in the first as their only earned run.
