Freshmen Get Their First ‘Test’ at SHU

This past week was the freshmen’s first experience with college exams at Siena Heights University.

The first college exam for Avery Chezem was stressful. She said the reason being was she had never taken a college exam before, although, in high school, she said she was always great test-taker. How long did she prepare for exams?

“During study hall I studied extremely hard for two hours, and stayed an extra hour,” she said.

Many freshman said they were nervous. What are some strategies of studying? Chezem said she stays focused, goes over material in different ways, and learns the material when she first gets it to remember it. She said she did great on all of her exams because of the work she has put in.

Ellie Kebler is a freshman who is double majoring in business and communications. She had four exams this past week in psychology, business, communications, and statistics. Kebler graduated high school with a 3.78 GPA, and in the top 25 percent of her class. She said she hopes to continue her academic success at SHU.

She said, “I received very good grades on all four, and I spent so many hours studying for them. My studying strategies were flashcards, reading back over the chapter, and highlighting key points in the notes.”

“Obviously, college exams were a lot more strenuous, and demanding than high school, never being a great a test-taker has been something I have struggled with over the past couple of years,” she continued. “I was so on edge that I was losing sleep. I realized now that as long as I study the material I learned I will do fine on the exams.”
