SHU Sports Roundup: March 30-April 5

Siena Heights University Athletics

March 30

Baseball @ Madonna, 8-3 L & 4-0 L

The baseball team dropped both contests of their double-header at Madonna by final scores of 8-3 and 4-0. In game one, a six-run seventh inning propelled the Crusaders to an 8-3 win in what was a relatively close game beforehand. In game two, the lack of offense for SHU proved costly in a 4-0 defeat. The Saints had zero multi-base hits in both games, a large reason for their lack of offensive production.

Softball vs. Saint Francis (Ind.), 8-7 W & 9-1 W

The softball team swept their double-header match with St. Francis with final scores of 8-7 and 9-1. It took a monstrous comeback in game one for the Saints, as a 6-1 lead for St. Francis turned into a quick 6-6 tie after SHU put together a five-run seventh inning to force extras. Both teams scored once in the eight, but the Saints were able to win in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a game winning RBI from Skylar Crenshaw. Game two provided a lot less stress for SHU, as the Saints went on to win with ease, scoring nine runs over five innings on their way to a 9-1 win.

Women’s Lacrosse @ Lourdes (Ohio), 14-12 W

Siena Heights sophomore Kayla Parks scored a season-high seven goals in the Saints 14-12 win over Lourdes. The game was tied 8-8 at the half, but a 6-3 second half advantage was enough for the Saints to get the win and move to 5-4 on the year. Goalie Alyssa Hopkins had 13 saves in the win.

Men’s Volleyball vs. Lourdes (Ohio), 3-0 L

The Siena Heights men’s volleyball team was not able to defeat Lourdes for a share of the Mideast Conference title, falling to the Gray Wolves 3-0 by final set scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-13. The seventh-ranked Wolves played spoiler to the Saints on senior night, despite Jeff Hardman eclipsing the SHU career block assists record with 135.

April 1

Men’s Lacrosse vs. Lourdes (Ohio), 9-8 W

In a defensive showdown, the men’s lacrosse team was able to upset second-ranked Lourdes (Ohio) by a final score of 9-8. The score was all tied at eight a piece after four quarters of action, and Danny Orr put the game winning goal in the net to seal the victory in overtime. Goalie Tyler Hooper had 13 saves in the win.

Women’s Lacrosse @ Robert Morris (Ill.), 20-4 L

The women’s lacrosse team fell to 5-5 after a disappointing 20-4 road loss at the hands of Robert Morris (Ill.). Sabrina Snow scored the opening goal of the game to give the Saints a 1-0 advantage, but that was about as good as the day would get for the Saints. RMU came back to take an 11-4 halftime lead, then continued their efforts with a 9-0 second half shutout. Tabitha Ferguson stopped nine shots in the net in her first game back from injury.

April 2

Men’s Volleyball @ Cincinnati Christian (Ohio), 3-0 W

After a disappointing loss at home to Lourdes (Ohio), the Saints took care of business on the road, beating Cincinnati Christian 3-0 by final set scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-22. Matthew Dugan led the way with 14 kills and 11 digs. With the win, the Saints improved to 17-7 on the regular season heading into post-season play.

April 3

Softball vs. Indiana Tech, 12-9 W & 8-3 W

The Siena Heights softball team improved their record to 14-13 following a double-header sweep over visiting Indiana Tech. In game one, the Saints put a six-run inning in the bottom of the second only to have the Warriors respond with an eight run third. The Saints came back, however, scoring four runs in the bottom of the third to reclaim the lead. In game two, the Saint used another big inning of offense, this time a four run second, to secure an 8-3 victory.

Baseball vs. Concordia, 5-4 L, 6-1 W & 2-1 L

Despite outscoring Concordia 11-8 over the course of three games, the Saints only went 1-2 in their triple-header against the Cardinals. Over half of the Saints runs on the day came from one inning, when they put up six runs in the bottom of the sixth in game two to beat the Cardinals 6-1. In the other two contests, the Saints lost by one run each on the wrong side of a tight match.

April 4

Women’s Lacrosse @ Lawrence Tech, 18-4 L

The women’s lacrosse team fell to 5-6 on the season after an 18-4 loss at the hands of fifth-ranked Lawrence Tech. The Saints were holding their own after the first half, only down 7-3 to one of the nation’s top teams. In the second half, however, an 11-1 Lawrence Tech advantage gave the Blue Devils a convincing win over the Saints. For the second straight game no Saint scored more than one goal. Goalie Tabitha Ferguson had 10 saves in the loss.
