Acapelicans Making Sweet Music at SHU

The Acapelicans singing group began at Siena Heights in 2008, which was started by director Michael Yuen. This group is co-ed, containing both men and women.

The group started out this year with 12 members and is growing. Even though this group is open to any student in the Siena community, it is composed of mostly theater majors.

The Acapelicans perform at many well-known events on campus, including Halo Fest, all of the convocations, Torch Night as well as different places and events in Lenawee County.

The main competition is the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella Great Lakes quarterfinals, which puts SHU up against the groups from larger institutions like the University of Michigan. Their music contains mostly pop music that is heard on the radio, like One Direction, some alternative music and also some jazz pieces.

“What I like about being in the Acapelicans is that we are all like a big family and we are together constantly and also always singing together,” said Stacia Serafin, a group member and also the business manager. “I think the reason why there are so many theater majors is because those who have never been in choir or in a play find auditioning kind of a daunting thing to do, but shouldn’t be since it is in front of your peers.

“I would encourage the students who may not be theater majors to audition, even though it may be daunting at times.”

The auditions for the Acapelicans will be at 9 p.m. April 28 in the Performing Arts Center lobby area. To prepare, students should bring a verse and a chorus of a memorized song. All students are encouraged to audition.
