To represent Siena Heights at nationals in an individual sport like cross country is a very large accomplishment. To make nationals in any sport is always a great feeling, and making it as an individual is even more impressive.

This is what Esrom Woldemichael has done for Siena Heights in 2017. Woldemichael ran well enough this fall to qualify for nationals, even though the team did not make it. He mentioned that he has not felt great in a while, and has a strain in his hamstring, yet he still felt like he was healthy enough to make an impact at nationals. To be competing with some of the best athletes in the nation is always tough, but he knew if he put his nose to the grindstone, anything was possible.

Nationals were in Washington state this year, and out of 328 runners, Woldemichael finished 227th. At first glance, this may not seem too hot. However, think about it: he still had to qualify with the best runners in the nation. He finished 3 minutes behind the first place winner, and sees nothing but positives looking toward the future.

Woldemichael said he believes next year the team will make nationals, because they are young and hungry.
