Siena Heights University (SHU) will host its fourth annual career expo on Wednesday, Nov. 6.The expo is for all students, not just seniors. Melissa Growden , the director of Career Services, explained, “Anyone can attend, it is never too early to start creating a network.” Growden stressed that it is beneficial for underclassmen to go—not only are there job opportunities, but there are internships available as well.
This event is free, but requires business attire. Growden noted that this is a professional event so showing up in a pair of jeans is strongly discouraged. Business attire will help you with self- marketing. Another item that will help you with self-marketing is a resume. It is not required to bring a resume, but employers will be impressed to see one. Growden and Barry Reinink, SHU’s Career Counselor, are both available to schedule appointments to help students make sure their resumes are top notch. A little advice with scheduling appointments regarding the Career Expo includes scheduling appointments early. There are also events being held a few weeks before the job fair including two job fair workshops. The first workshop is held on October 23rd at 6 p.m. and the second is on October 24th at 1 p.m., both located at the University Center Community room. A resume writing party will be held on October 25th, at 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the SHU library back stacks.
Last year’s event had about 75 vendors in attendance. This year, Growden hopes to have even more vendors in attendance. Some of the employers attending this year’s Career Expo include: Quicken Loans, U.S. Border Control, Michigan Department of Corrections, La-Z Boy, and Robert Half International (an accounting and marketing business).
Not only is the Career Expo open to students of Siena Heights, but the entire community. Growden also had some advice for those planning to attend this Career Expo. Freshmen and sophomores should go and collect as much information as possible from employers. Find out what underclassmen need to do to prepare themselves to be in a position to be hired.
