Abdiel Ondo

Studying in another country isn’t that easy. There are many challenges an international student can face, such as the changes in climate, the food, the environment, etc. It is not that easy to leave both your friends and family to immigrate to somewhere completely different from your country. We interviewed one of our international students, Abdiel Ondo, a sophomore criminal justice major from Equatorial Guinea in Africa). He told us his best and worst moments at the Siena Heights University and, of course, his goals. Here is what he said:

“Studying outside my country wasn’t that easy. I feel lucky because when I first came here (at Siena Heights), I easily made a lot of friends, and a few students from my country were here.

“However, it was not easy at all. I was missing a lot of things from my country, such as my family, the food and my friends. My first semester was the worst. I couldn’t concentrate because I was homesick and at some point, I even wanted to go back home. They placed me on the Academic Probation status, and since then, I knew that I needed to work harder if I wanted toacheive my goals. The climate was completely the opposite because I’m from a country with a tropical climate. On top of that, I was missing my mother’s food.

“My best moment was when in my second semester, I passed all my classes with B’s. Since then, it has been only good grades because of my efforts. I realized no one but myself will help me become successful. My advice to all the international students is that you can all make it! You just have to work hard. Don’t feel intimidated. You guys have both Dan and Fatmy in the International Studies office. They are the best. They really helped me, and they are always there when you need them. I consider them family. So, don’t let the climate, the food, and the language take over your dreams. Fight for your goals and make both yourself and your family proud. Achieve your goals, no matter what.”

Estudiar en el extranjero nunca ha sido tarea facil. Son muchas las dificultades que la mayoria de estudiantes internacionales pueden experimentar. El cambio de clima, la nueva ciudad o estado, la comida, el idioma, etc. No es facil dejar todo atras para emprenderse en una aventura que es la de inmigrar a otro pais para estudiar. Tuvimos la oportunidad de tener una charla con uno de nuestros estudiantes internacionales quien nos conto como ha sido su experiencia hasta ahora en la Universidad de Siena Heights, su peores y buenos momentos, al igual que su metas. Su nombre es Abdiel Ondo y esta en su Segundo anhio de Carrera. Esto fue lo que nos conto:

“Estudiar fuera de mi pais no ha sido ni es nada facil. Tuve la suerte de hacer muchas amistades al llegar y de encontrar a otros estudiantes de mi pais en la Universidad. Aun asi, no fue tarea facil, porque a veces extranho mi pais, la familia, la comida, etc. Mi primer semester aqui fue el peor. No estaba concentrado en las clases porque hechaba de menos todoy tuvieron que ponerme en el Academic Probation. Me sentia a veces intimidado porque era mi primera vez de estar en una clase tomando ya clases de Carrera. No fue facil. El clima fue otro obstaculo porque mi pais tiene un clima tropical. Pero al llegar aqui tuve que adaptarme. La comida no ha sido un problema tan grave pero sigo hechando de menos los guisos de mi madre. Mi mejor momento fue cuando sali de la condicion de Academic Probation y aprobe todas las materias gracias a mis esfuerzos. Mi meta es poder graduarme. Mi consejo para todos los nuevos y antiguos estudiantes internacionales, es que no se intimiden por nada. En la oficina de asuntos internacionales tenemos buenos guias, Dan y Fatmy y me ayudaron bastante a integrarme, fueron de gran ayuda. Son como segundos padres para mi. Y otra cosa importante es que luchen por sus metas. Estamos aqui por un objetivo, que es graduarnos. No dejen que ni el clima, el idioma, etc. se interpongan en su camino. Piensen que son el orgullo de sus padres y cumplan sus metas. Gracias.”
