Men’s Basketball

Last week, the Saints fell short in both games between Davenport and Concordia. On Wednesday, the Saints hosted fifth-ranked Davenport. The Saints held a 38-30 halftime lead in part to Christian Coville’s 17-point outburst, along with a team shooting percentage of 46 percent. In the second half, Davenport started off with a ferocious 9-0 run against the Saints, which ballooned into 20-3 run and a 50-41 lead. The shooting percentage dropped down to 31 percent in the second half and was outrebounded 39-30, leading to a 69-61 loss. Coville ended with 25 points and 8 rebounds, followed by George Goodman with 11 points and 8 assists.

Saturday, the Saints traveled to conference foe Concordia. The Saints fell behind early after a 10 point spurt from Concordia, turning into a 16-7 lead, and never trailed. Getting it within 10 points at the end of the half trailing 37-29, the Saints were unable to withstand the following two runs from Concordia of 9-0 and an 11 point streak. The Saints got no favors from their shooting strokes, shooting 38 percent for the game while allowing Concordia to shoot 64 percent from the game and 53 from the arc. Outrebounded and beat in assists 24-11, the Saints fell 79-57. Tyler Leighton and Christian Coville led the way for the Saints with 19 and 12 points respectively. The Saints (8-14) take on Indiana Tech at the Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.

Women’s Basketball

The Saints held a record of 2-1 last week. The Saints took on second-ranked Davenport on Wednesday night. Both teams opened the half with early runs back and forth before Davenport brought out a 10-0 run, giving them a 32-24 halftime lead. After closing the gap to within three points, the Saints allowed a 15-4 run, ballooning the lead to 51-37. One last push remained for the Saints, making it 55-46, but it wasn’t enough as Concordia pulled away and left with a 71-52 win against the Saints. The Saints held the rebound advantage but were haunted by the 26 turnovers committed and the 18 points off of them. Sierra Calhoun led the way with 21 points and became the all-time free throws leader at 373, surpassing the original 367 by Hall-of-Famer Sheila Landerschier. Jessie Arnold contributed a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Saturday, the Saints traveled to Concordia and cruised to an 87-52 win over their conference opponent. The Saints ripped off a 20-point run in the first half while Concordia was 0-9 and trailed 34-11, and the Saints ballooned it to a 48-18 lead at the half. The Saints shot 51 percent for the game while holding Concordia to 30 percent and held a 46-29 rebound advantage. The Saints also had four in double-figures to lead the way (Arnold 10, Calhoun 11, Brazzle 11, Knannlein 10).

On Monday night, the Saints took on cross-town rival, Adrian College, at the Fieldhouse. After starting slowly and trailing 15-6 early, the Saints reeled off a 21-3 run, spacing the end of the first half and crossing the second. Adrian was able to close the gap to 35-30 midway through the second half, but an 8-0 run by the Saints put all hopes of a comeback aside as the Saints went on to win 48-38 and improve to 17-5 on the season. On Wednesday night, the Saints will host Indiana Tech.

Men’s Volleyball

This past week, the Saints went up against two ranked opponents within the top 10 and put their strength to the test against 10th ranked Robert Morris Eagles and the 7th ranked Lourdes Wolves. Saturday, the Saints took on Robert Morris in a conference battle at home. Robert Morris (4-1) won in straight sets against the Saints and were in control on each set. The Saints fought in both of the first two sets and held advantages early on before errors took over and allowed RMU to pull away. Gilius Blinstrubas led the Saints with nine kills, while Arthur Gwoszdz tallied 20 assists.

On Tuesday night, the Saints took on Lourdes at home. The Saints weren’t able to gain traction and lost in straight sets (3-0). In sets two and three, the Saints held advantages and had a five point run in the second set before a double-hit error derailed them, losing it 25-18. In set three, the Saints also held an advantage on numerous occasions, leading 20-19, 21-20, and 22-21 before falling short in the final set 25-23.
