Flu Shots Available This Month

Siena Heights is offering an Influenza Vaccine Clinic everyday from Oct. 1-15.

The vaccine is completely free and open to all students, staff and faculty at SHU. Siena Heights Campus Nurse Sister Sharon Spanbauer will be the one giving the vaccines to anyone who is interested.

Spanbauer encourages everyone to get the vaccine.

She said, ”For those people who are not good with shots, this vaccination does not hurt. In fact, many people have told me that they did not even feel it. I encourage everyone to get the vaccination, especially those who are going to be going home for vacation and have elderly people and young children in their family because it can be fatal to them.”

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the seasonal flu vaccine has prevented more than 40,000 flu related deaths from 2006-14. Also, 200,000 people are hospitalized each year for heart conditions and respiratory illnesses associated with seasonal influenza virus infections.

Nurse Spanbauer encourages everyone to come out and vaccinated. She said, ”Influenza is a very serious illness and people don’t realize just how dangerous it is.”

The clinics that are left are as followed:

  • October 13, in the University Center Living Room from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
  • October 14, in the Clinic from 9 a.m. until noon
  • October 15, in the University Center Living Room from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

The shot is delivered in the upper arm. If students come to get a shot, Nurse Spanbauer encourages all to wear short-sleeve shirts for easy access to this area.
