Adopt-A-Sister Program A Unique SHU Experience

Siena Heights University was founded by the Adrian Dominican Sisters in 1919. Many students at Siena have formed relationships with the sisters on campus. One way to get to know a sister is by joining the Adopt-A-Sister organization on campus.

Senior golfer Andrea Rumler helps students contact sisters. The group normally has a table at the Student Organization Fair where students can sign up. Once a student has signed up, they will be paired with a Dominican sister, and the relationship is up to the two from there. The student and the sister will decide when they want to meet, how often, etc.

“My experience with it has been unbelievably awesome,” said Rumler. “The sisters are absolutely amazing to learn about, and getting to connect with them on a deeper level has only taught me of their compassion and education geared towards improving communities and the world.”

There are events throughout the year to bring together all those in the group. Students can talk to other sisters and learn even more.

Sophomore Mitchell Prater, a member of the group, said, “Adopt-A-Sister is a great program that we have here at Siena Heights. It really gives us the opportunity to dive into the lives of the Adrian Dominican Sisters, and it’s always cool when you can bring a smile to their faces by just sitting down and talking to them.”

Rumler said, “The best part would probably be that you completely get out of it what you put in it. The more you meet with the sisters and get immersed in their community, the better it is, and it’s all up to you. They have open arms and hearts willing to accept any student, so it’s truly an amazing feeling knowing you have someone supporting you every step of the way. Also, someone who can tell you awesome stories and more about their life.”

Any student is welcome to contact Rumler to get involved with this organization.
