It seems as if just yesterday Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were headlining news stories regarding their marriage. It is no secret that, though the royal family has little to no impact on American politics, there is no shortage of media, tabloids, and news regarding the royal family and their whereabouts.

However, many have failed to consider the fact that a great deal of the developments within the media may have an impact on those they entail.

The recent development as it relates to the Duke, Prince Harry, and Duchess Meghan Markle, has been the announcement that they would like to separate from the royal family and become financially independent.

On Sussexroyal’s Instagram page, the couple said, “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen…We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America… This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter.”

In essence, this means that they would like to withdraw from their position as figureheads within the monarchy, however, still supporting the queen and her endeavors.

It is important to remember that as members of the royal family, the Duke and Duchess are supported by taxpayers and are limited to what they can and cannot do in terms of where their money goes.

For example, this means that they can only support charities that the royal establishment as a whole support. The fact that they are supported partially by taxpayers gives insight as to why many of their citizens are biased regarding this decision.

Aside from the fact that they are sustained by the institution that they are a part of, it is also very important to mention again that they are significant figures within the media.

Many have argued the fact that Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, is treated extremely different from her sister-in-law, Meghan. Many have pointed out that this may be due to the interracial nature of Meghan’s and Harry’s marriage.

It is quite possible that, with Prince Harry’s history in terms of media regarding his mother, and the scrutiny she endured, they may be making this decision in order to avoid the stress that comes along with being in their position.

The family mentions that this transition will provide them with space to focus on the next chapter, and this could very well be pointing to space in regards to media and attention from the press.

Whether it be for financial reasons, press-related reasons or something completely unrelated to either of the two, the fact of the matter is that it is quite possible that Meghan and Harry are setting a precedent for the future of royal generations to come.
